On November 7, 2023, the university community at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, Mihintale, was given access to four tube wells that Global Development International Private Limited had contributed. The goal of this project was to embrace sustainable water conservation measures and provide the university community with a sustainable source of safe and clean water. This project would help the institution’s long-term problems with water scarcity and improve university sustainability.

The Vice Chancellor of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, Professor (Mrs.) G.A.S. Ginigaddara, and the Proprietor of Global Development International Private Limited, Mr. Jamaldeen Assan, performed the opening. The event was attended by the university’s registrar, Dr. Manoj Fernando, dean of the faculty of applied sciences, Prof. Bandula Jayathilaka, dean of the faculty of management studies, Dr. Chathuranga Bamunuarachchige, dean of the faculty of technology, Mr. N.S.K. Herath, the project coordinator, and other university officials.

SDG Achievements

Access to clean and safe water is essential for promoting good health. By addressing water scarcity and providing a sustainable source of water, the project supports SDG 3’s goal of ensuring healthy lives and well-being for all.

The project directly contributes to SDG 6 by providing the university community with access to sustainable sources of safe and clean water. This is crucial for addressing water scarcity issues and ensuring the availability of clean water for the well-being of the community.

The project involves the contribution of tube wells by Global Development International Private Limited, showcasing innovation and collaboration between the university and the private sector to address water scarcity. This aligns with SDG 9’s goal of promoting innovation and building resilient infrastructure.

Ensuring access to clean and sustainable water contributes to creating more sustainable and resilient communities, aligning with SDG 11’s objective of making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

The collaboration between Rajarata University and Global Development International Private Limited reflects a partnership (SDG 17) between different sectors to address water scarcity and promote sustainable development.
